Dr. Robert Szejner is both an Instructor and the Faculty Student Advisor in the Program in Criminal Justice. He earned his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership at St. Joseph’s University, and his Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice also from St. Joseph’s University. As a doctoral candidate his research focused on prison education and its sustainability in relation to the Chief correction officers of the State Correctional Systems attitudes.

Professor Szejner is currently serving as the Undergraduate Program Director for the Program Criminal Justice Program. He is an instructor of criminal justice, policing, serial crime, ethics, media’s relationship to criminal justice, victimology and corrections courses. He also acts as a liaison between the Rutgers University and New Brunswick Police Departments.

Prior to coming to Rutgers University in 2006, Professor Szejner was a member of the criminal justice programs at The College of New Jersey and Kean University. Additionally, he taught at the University of Delaware, Saint Joseph’s University and the State of New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice and Trenton Police Academies. Professor Szejner served as the chair in the area of Issues in Correctional Administration and Management at the conference of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and presented research at the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Justice Educators Conference. Professor Szejner began his career at the Trenton New Jersey Police Department. Over his 29-year police career, Professor Szejner received multiple commendations and promoted to Lieutenant before retiring to pursue a career in academia. He earned a B.S. from The College of New Jersey (Trenton State College) in 1995, M.S. from Saint Joseph’s University in 2001 and Ed.D. from Saint Joseph’s University in 2009. Professor Szejner served as a technical advisor for the Pinkerton/First Security Consulting Team as well as New York Times Best Selling Author Janet Evanovich.

His academic work focuses on giving a real world experience perspective to the criminal justice program. Professor Szejner’s research addresses correctional education and its correlation to future crime and recidivism.
