Criminal Justice Program

 

Major Requirements

Effective Fall of 2001 the major Administration of Justice was replaced with a new interdisciplinary major in Criminal Justice.  Rutgers University Students who had completed 60 credits or more by the end of Spring 2001 semester were allowed to continue to major in Administration of Justice, or declare a major in Criminal Justice.

The Criminal Justice Major will require 36 credits as follows:

  • Introduction to Criminal Justice (202:201)
  • Criminology (920:222)
  • Police (202:202) 
  • Prisons and Prisoners (202:203)
  • Crime & Public Policy (202:204), Criminal Procedure (202:205) or Law and Politics (790:106)

One of the following research methods courses:

  • Criminal Justice Research (202:307 or 308)
  • Introduction to Political Science Methods (790:300)
  • Research Methods in Social Psychology (830:323)
  • Research in Personality (830:341-342)
  • Introduction to Social Research (920:311)

Thematic requirements:

Three elective courses as follows:

  • Any Criminal Justice course

    RESTRICTIONS:

  •  To declare, students must complete Intro to Criminal Justice (202:201) w/ a grade of C or better and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  • At least one Criminal Justice elective course (3 credits) must be at the 400 level.
     Only courses with a C grade or better may be counted toward the major.
     Only 3 credits of Internship (202:406, 407, or 408) will count toward the major. Students can take only 3 credits of Internship per semester with a limit of 6 internship credits overall.
     
  • Only 6 credits of Independent Study (202:495) will count toward the major, and students can only take 3 credits of Independent Study per semester.
     

Students are strongly encouraged to seek academic advice from the Criminal Justice (AOJ) Department so that an academic course of study which will match their post-baccalaureate plans can be recommended.

Additional course: Criminal Justice Research Methods (307) can also be used an elective, if it was not used to fulfill a General Coursework requirement.

Honors Thesis Option

Students who have completed 15 credits toward the major, senior standing, a 3.4 GPA in the major, and a 3.0 GPA overall are eligible to elect the Honors Thesis option. These independent research projects, carried out in the senior year under the supervision of program faculty, carry 3-6 credits.  The Honors program for Criminal Justice majors may be undertaken in conjunction with a Paul Robeson, Mabel Smith Douglass, University College or Henry Rutgers Honors thesis.
